ABOUT US

ABOUT US
We are from Cornwall, England.
We love to travel and to explore places in a campervan. We find
wide open spaces exhilarating
and do lots of walking. Show us an accessible hill or mountain and we want to go up it.
We like watching birds but are not twitchers. To be honest Lawson is more into bird spotting than me but what I find amazing

is the diversity of birdlife, and the fact birds of all sizes continue to live side by side with us humans. So, in the course of our explorations
we may make a detour to the local dump because more often than not it will be one of the best places to see birds.
We are sure New Zealand will not disappoint us when it comes to birds but what about other wildlife and natural wonders?
Will we encounter anything to beat the sight of polar bears on sea ice at the North Pole?
And what will we think of the house at Paraparaumu that Ron and Vivien have built? All will be revealed.......

Where was I?

So where were we when I last updated you on our route around South Island? On the road from Lake Pukaki and moving back to Oamaru on the coast, I believe (making a detour to the clay cliffs en route).
After 2 nights of wild, or freedom camping as it's called here, I was glad to get back into a campsite with full facilities, including power showers, when we arrived in Oamaru on Thursday 13 February. Not that we don't have a shower in the van but it's only adequate for one of Lawson's ex-submariner's showers; 30 seconds of water, soap, then 30 more seconds of water to rinse. I need at least 5 minutes at full blast, more if washing my hair.
After our showers we wandered downtown, enjoyed a meal in a restaurant (not having to cook it - Lawson's task , or wash it up - my usual task) in the old port area, which is full of old buildings gradually being restored.
By then the rain had come (the weather is also something the locals talk/grumble about a lot; very British) so we gave penguin watching a miss.
