The Rakaia is one of NZ's many braided rivers. This means a river which has divided into lots of different sections, or braids, as it flows over wide gravel beds.
The colour of the water reminded me of the china clay pits around St.Austell, and the reason for it is the same in both places - suspended particles. In NZ glaciers grind stone into minute, invisible particles which are suspended in the water and reflect the sunlight.
