ABOUT US

ABOUT US
We are from Cornwall, England.
We love to travel and to explore places in a campervan. We find
wide open spaces exhilarating
and do lots of walking. Show us an accessible hill or mountain and we want to go up it.
We like watching birds but are not twitchers. To be honest Lawson is more into bird spotting than me but what I find amazing

is the diversity of birdlife, and the fact birds of all sizes continue to live side by side with us humans. So, in the course of our explorations
we may make a detour to the local dump because more often than not it will be one of the best places to see birds.
We are sure New Zealand will not disappoint us when it comes to birds but what about other wildlife and natural wonders?
Will we encounter anything to beat the sight of polar bears on sea ice at the North Pole?
And what will we think of the house at Paraparaumu that Ron and Vivien have built? All will be revealed.......

NZ campsites

I've been very impressed with the facilities at the commercial campsites we've used.
For a start there are always really hot and powerful showers, and the hot water never runs out no matter how busy the site is or what time of day.
Next, the kitchens come fully equipped with a number of hobs, at least one oven, toasters, microwaves, kettles and fridges. Again plenty of hot water.
The site in Invercargill even supplied cutlery, crockery, a selection of pots and pans and full washing up items such as pot scourers, tea towels and washing up liquid. The owners there were a constant presence, particularly Angela, whom I discovered polishing the washing machines at 11 o' clock one night.
There are usually tables to eat at next to the kitchen and a lounge area with comfy chairschairs and TV.
Most sites also have Wi-Fi now, and in some, computers for the use of campers.
The average cost of all this has been 35 dollars (about £18) a night, including electricity for the van ( which we've needed not only for e.g. lights but also for charging my electric toothbrush!)

This was the most homely kitchen we've come across, on a small site called Possum Lodge at Manapouri where we stayed before going sailing on Doubtful Sound.

Tonight (1 March) we're on a site near Wanaka (which is a ski resort in winter) where the facilities include a spa, a sauna and 'music' in the showers. But we have paid £23.50 for the night - and Lawson enjoyed his sauna.

Occasionally the charge for the pitch and electricity has not included a shower and we've had to purchase tokens to use in the shower room. At one of the more expensive sites the receptionist told us that the showers were 'complimentary'. The New Zealand woman behind us,who bore an uncanny resemblance to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall ( and strangely there was an elderly English couple on the site who looked and sounded very much like Her  Maj. and the Duke), snorted and said, 'Complimentary my bum.'
