ABOUT US

ABOUT US
We are from Cornwall, England.
We love to travel and to explore places in a campervan. We find
wide open spaces exhilarating
and do lots of walking. Show us an accessible hill or mountain and we want to go up it.
We like watching birds but are not twitchers. To be honest Lawson is more into bird spotting than me but what I find amazing

is the diversity of birdlife, and the fact birds of all sizes continue to live side by side with us humans. So, in the course of our explorations
we may make a detour to the local dump because more often than not it will be one of the best places to see birds.
We are sure New Zealand will not disappoint us when it comes to birds but what about other wildlife and natural wonders?
Will we encounter anything to beat the sight of polar bears on sea ice at the North Pole?
And what will we think of the house at Paraparaumu that Ron and Vivien have built? All will be revealed.......

My Rotorua

We didn't know whether to visit Rotorua.
The New Zealanders we met seemed divided about its attractions, and we weren't convinced that it would be time well spent.
When it comes to bubbling mud we'd seen a lot in Costa Rica. Natural cooking pots in the ground we'd seen in the Azores.
Is there a geyser (particularly one that's been encouraged to spout by the addition of chemicals) to compare with the Trevi Fountain?
As for steam, there had been a lot of that in Tongariro - and when Lawson had been told at a Top 10 campsite that they didn't accept the discount card he'd purchased before leaving home.
In the end we decided to head for Lake Rotorua and see what we found.
So our Rotura trip comprised of:-

Some very big lakes

A whiff of sulphur (or was it just money) when we passed Hells Gates which is where the volcanic phenomena are most visible but which is also privately owned land so that access comes at a price

For the first time, a walk through forest which still had some very old, tall, straight trees

A DoC site that was full of campers in cars and only sloping pitches

A Top 10 site on the water sports lake, Tikitapu, that didn't upset Lawson

A delightful backwater on the bank of the small Lake Okareka

A drive around the outskirts of Rotorua, which is a big city and an adult playground offering bungy jumps, zip wires, white water rafting etc.etc.
